Optimising Taxi 5.0 – Part 5 of a six-part series

Maximising Taxi Earnings While Balancing Fairness and Trust

Revenue management in the taxi and eHail sector is often misinterpreted as nothing more than “surge pricing.” In reality, optimisation is more about ensuring drivers can earn a fair living, opening new income streams for operators, protecting affordability for passengers, and enabling authorities to deliver on their mobility and long-term sustainability goals.

Barriers to effective revenue management

At the operational level, weak infrastructure undermines performance. Unreliable devices and POS terminals create downtime, leading to missed trips, frustrated passengers, and lost income. In Dubai, the Road Transport Authority’s shift to industrial-grade in-vehicle devices cut downtime dramatically, showing how lifecycle planning protects long-term revenue.

Revenue leakage is another persistent challenge. “Black trips” (journeys taken outside the system so drivers can pocket the cash) remain common. Some drivers even claim their POS machines are “not working” to avoid digital payments. Without integrated monitoring, these gaps erode trust and revenue alike. Authorities in Dubai introduced a public policy whereby rides were free of charge if POS machines were not operational. Doing so ended the problem.

Opportunities are also being left untapped. Without corporate accounts or loyalty schemes, operators miss out on stable, high-value passengers. Likewise, the absence of clear concession management means inclusivity goals aren’t always met.

From a policy perspective, the absence of market-wide visibility is just as damaging. Without real data on total turnover, regulators struggle to enforce tax compliance or distribute revenue fairly between drivers, operators, and government. And while dynamic pricing can help match supply and demand, it risks backlash if seen as opportunistic rather than fair.

Revenue management needs to optimise the interests of three parties: the authority, the operator, and the passenger. Their needs aren’t always aligned, but a well-structured system makes them sustainable together.

Why revenue management matters
For authorities, revenue optimisation is not simply commercial. It keeps the system sustainable. If drivers and operators cannot earn, services collapse. It upholds fairness by protecting affordability while enabling operators to remain viable. And it safeguards compliance by ensuring turnover is visible, taxes are collected, and revenue is distributed equitably.

Technology that delivers

Innovations in technology underpin how income is protected, diversified, and grown. Trapeze’s platform provides multiple layers of control and opportunity.

AI-powered dispatch and predictive analytics

By analysing patterns in bookings and live demand, Trapeze can forecast where rides will be needed. Heat maps guide drivers to hotspots, reducing dead kilometres by up to 10–15%. For operators, this means higher earnings per vehicle. For regulators, this means improved utilisation across the network.

Lifecycle-proof hardware

Devices engineered to withstand extreme heat, vibration, and humidity keep trips running without interruption. The payoff is fewer replacements, lower stress for drivers, and stronger long-term ROI for operators.

Accurate metering and fare validation

Most systems rely on GPS to estimate trip distance, but GPS can’t account for detours or traffic diversions. Trapeze connects directly to the vehicle’s CAN-bus (the car’s digital nervous system), so fares are based on true odometer readings. This creates tamper-proof, transparent charges that protect passengers, defend operators, and give authorities confidence that every kilometer is accounted for.

Income protection and fraud detection

By reconciling meter and dispatch data in real time, Trapeze detects “black trips” instantly. If a meter is running without a booking, the system flags it and creates an audit trail. Operators step in before revenue is lost, and regulators gain assurance that every trip is tracked.

Seamless passenger-first payment methods

Trapeze supports QR codes, mobile wallets, contactless cards, and digital apps, giving passengers freedom to pay how they choose. For operators and authorities, this ensures “no ride goes unpaid,” reducing churn and guaranteeing compliance.

Diversification through corporate accounts and loyalty programs

Corporate billing modules let companies manage employee travel under one account, while loyalty schemes help retain passengers. In the UK, minicab operators built much of their business on corporate accounts, generating predictable revenue streams, a model underused in the Middle East but ripe with potential.

Smart demand management

Beyond daily earnings, integration with Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platforms channels demand during off-peak hours. This stabilises cash flow and positions taxis as a resilient part of the wider transport system.

It’s not always about charging more money. It’s about maximising utilisation and protecting every kilometer travelled. That’s where technology really moves the dial.

Steps for cities on the Taxi 5.0 journey

As in any customer service industry, the key to expansion and customer retention is to provide excellent service. And the key to increasing revenue is to provide that service more efficiently.  Every market is at a different stage of maturity, which means the revenue journey looks different.

For emerging systems, the immediate focus is stamping out fraud and leakage. Mandating digital payments, linking meters with dispatch, and enforcing device reliability create the foundations for trust. Once that base is secure, cities should look for quick wins quick wins that prove the value of stronger revenue management:

Corporate accounts can deliver steady income almost overnight.

Concessions for vulnerable groups broaden access and build goodwill.

Taxi systems automatically detect toll gates without the need for manual intervention by the driver.

In advanced markets, the opportunity lies in diversification and integration. Loyalty programs, targeted campaigns, and MaaS alignment give operators new revenue streams, regulators more stability, and passengers more consistent experiences. By phasing improvements this way, authorities can reduce resistance, build trust, and steadily create systems that are financially resilient as well as socially fair.

Towards Taxi 5.0

Effective revenue management helps city leaders by making taxi networks more:

  • Connected through live oversight
  • Accessible with flexible payment and concessions
  • Efficient through reduced idle time
  • Safe by removing pressure for risky behaviour
  • Inclusive through equitable pricing, and
  • Resilient by ensuring operators can withstand sudden, unexpected events.

But these outcomes don’t happen by accident. They emerge when cities make a conscious shift from fragmented systems to data-driven, technology-enabled, passenger-centred networks. Revenue optimisation is not only a financial exercise, it’s the mechanism that aligns the interests of drivers, operators, and the public so the entire ecosystem can thrive.

As cities move toward Taxi 5.0, the message is clear. When every kilometre is counted, every payment is trusted, and every stakeholder benefits, taxi networks stop being a legacy service and evolve into a strategic pillar of modern urban mobility.
